Last night's regular monthly meeting included an update on the National Health Care Day of Service at the end of this month. Events have been occurring all across the country to lead up to this day. By June 27th, those Americans who are struggling with health care costs, lacking coverage or live in fear because they are underinsured hope that we have begun the conversation about changing our health care system. On the 27th, communities across the country will be organizing everything from blood drives to health care faires. We were still mourning the sad murder of Dr. Tiller this month, when we receive the news today, June 10th, that (suspected) shooter James von brunn entered the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C., and opened fire. It does, indeed appear that domestic terrorism is on the rise.
Regardless of your position on abortion, murdering a physician is never acceptable. This form of violence is terrorism in its purest form. And it happened in Wichita, Kansas, the literal heartland of America. Deniers of the Holocaust in Germany and White Supremists who embrace some of those same ideas have been writing about acts of terrorism for years. The Southern Poverty Law Center tracks hate crimes. Then remember how Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck and Bill O'Reilly tried to call FOUL! over a few days when the Dept. of Homeland Security released the report entitled, "Rightwing Extremism - Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment" (a copy is linked on our Multimedia page) on April 7, 2009. They were sure it was talking about them and their "unorganized," "spur-of-the-moment" Tea Party Rallys that they were ... ahem, helping to organize. Recent events are sadly proving that the very same report, requested by the Bush Administration and finished in April of this year, was right.
Write letters to the editor, send emails, let no one forget how the Right Wing echoes that go out on the airwaves, and writers like Michelle Malkin (who is quoted as saying this about the report, "By contrast, the piece of crap report issued on April 7 is a sweeping indictment of conservatives.") who reinforce the same talking points, got it wrong. They don't want to see the threats from their own side.

There are many wonderful candidates who have already filed to run for office, or who have announced their intentions to run, on the Democratic ticket. We applaud them all for their willingness to make the sacrifice of their time and energy to serve our communities. The E. Hillsborough County Democratic Club would like to openly invite all candidates to contact our Vice President, Marvell Harris, and set up a time to meet our members at a general meeting. Our Club can never endorse a candidate in a Democratic Primary, however, our members and meetings attendees welcome the opportunity to hear about races in our area where they could volunteer. Time to get back to work!
